Review:

686 Men's GORE-TEX All Leather MittWe have some really frigid days in Idaho and Wyoming, so I am in constant search of quality mittens.  I’ve always been impressed with the quality and durability of 686 products. I was looking for a sturdy, warm, under-mitten with Gore-Tex. The 686 Men’s GORE-TEX® All Leather Mitts offered several things I was looking for in a mitten and have exceeded my expectations. The mittens come with Nikwax, which I highly recommend using.  In my experience, leather does soak up a fair amount of water and the Nikwak will help keep it out. These mittens have a GORE-TEX liner so your hands will likely not get wet but the gloves may become heavy if waterlogged. These mitts are really warm, 686 has them rated to -20 ℉, but they still breathe really well. On warmer days you will probably want something a bit lighter than this mitt. The Tricot lining feels really soft against your skin and is very comfortable. I was really surprised at how flexible they are and the Movement Fit™ Hand Articulation works very well.  I can easily adjust and buckle my bindings without having to take the mittens off.  These 686 mitts also feature Soundtouch™ Touchscreen Technology, which is a nice added bonus. Mittens can make it a little difficult to open apps, etc with precision but with a little practice, I have been able to perform most functions without removing the mitten.  One of the features I was looking for was an under-mitt, meant to be worn under the cuff of your jacket, I prefer this style and like a mitten than can easily slide under the cuff. The 686 All Leather mitts have a neoprene cuff with an adjustable velcro strap, making for a snug fit to keep elements out.

A unique feature of these mitts is the glove insert. Essentially its a mitten on the outside but a glove on the inside.  It was kind of a strange sensation at first but over time I’ve gotten used to it and it does seem to help when attempting to operate a touchscreen.  The goatskin leather palm and Everwear Grip have proved to very durable thus far.

Check these mittens out if you are looking for a GORE-TEX, all leather mitt.  They will keep your hands dry, warm and covered in style.

Pros:

  • Great Warmth
  • Stays dry – even drier with Nikwak
  • Comfortable – easy to put on and take off
  • Neoprene cuff with velcro strap stays snug
  • Touchscreen compatible

Cons:

  • Runs a bit small
