Review:
I have always been impressed with the construction and durability of the products from 686. The 686 Rodeo Leather Mitten is another quality product in their impressive line of gloves and mittens. The shell of this mitten is full-grain leather treated with a durable water-repellent finish (DWR). I appreciate the DWR coating as leather mitts often become waterlogged and heavy with use. I’ve used these for two months and still have not had to treat them with a sealant.
686 used infiDRY to create a waterproof yet breathable layer to keep your hands dry. To keep your hands warm, there is 300g of infiLOFT on the back of the Mitt and 100g in the palm. I found the Rodeo Mittens to be effective in keeping my hands warm down to about -10 degrees. Any colder than that and you might want to look into 686’s GORE-TEX options.
One of my main complaints with leather mitts is the palm often shows signs of wear or comes apart quickly. The Rodeo Mitt uses a Split Leather Palm reinforcement which has proved to be very durable. Hand drags and grabs have not had an impact on the palms.
The inside of the mitt is a Jersey lining, which is very soft and comfortable against your skin. The end of the mitt has finger separators that took a little getting used to but have proved to provide extra comfort and warmth.
A lot of leather mitts take time to break in and are stiff and difficult to move in. To solve this problem, the 686 Rodeo mitts use Movement Fit™ Hand Articulation. There was not a break-in period with these mitts at all and from day one they were comfortable and easy to move my hands. I can effortlessly perform simple tasks like operating zippers and strapping into my bindings.

The Rib Knit Inner Cuff keeps the elements out and keeps the mitt low profile so it will fit under the cuff of your jacket.
Overall impressions:
The 686 Rodeo Leather Mitten is a stylish leather mitt providing ample warmth in most conditions. They are very durable and have held up to my abuse and conditions I’ve used them in.
Pros:
- Great Style and Construction
- Good Warmth during most winter conditions
- Durable leather palm
- Fits true to size
Cons:
- none
