Review:
I’m always looking for the latest and greatest bibs in my outerwear collection, and when I found out that 686 had their first smarty cargo bib in the line up for 22-23, I was already set to get a them. 686 has always had a strong community around their outerwear and clothing line, so it was great to see that the brand listened to feedback around the smarty line need for bibs, I for one am very thankful for a brand that listens to their customers and builds products around this feedback loop.

After riding in several other bibs from 686 (the Frontier and the Dispatch Bibs), I knew that the attention to detail and design would be well thought out in the Smarty 3-in-1 Cargo Bib. These bibs are InfiniDry 20K which means they are very dry, with moderate breathability and provide one of the warmest bibs in 686’s line up with the included liner. I’ve worn them in -10 degree Fahrenheit up to 40 degrees and they are great in cold weather, they get a little too warm over 40 degrees but they are still one of my go to bibs for any season due to the versatility of the removable liner.
Let’s talk about the detachable liner, this tech from 686 was designed in the 90’s and has stood the test of time. It can be worn stand alone, in fact I wore them quite often around the house or out casually to the store or the neighborhood watering hole. The material is super soft and plush, you won’t want to take them off! The combination of shell outer and the detachable liner is perfect for taking you through most any conditions through out the season. The only time I wouldn’t wear my Smarty 3-in-1 Cargo Bib would be in very wet and damp conditions, I would prefer a gore tex shell, but otherwise this is a very versatile bib.

The fit is a little more baggy through the inseam, which works well to accommodate the liner, and otherwise it fits true to size. I would recommend to go with your normal size, or size up for a baggier fit. These bibs have held up great, and the fabric is durable so you won’t have to worry about the occasional tree branch ripping your bibs. I’ve really enjoyed riding in these bibs, and look forward to wearing them for at least another season!
Overall Impressions:
The 686 Smarty 3-in-1 Cargo Bib is for the rider that prefers bibs over pants, wants the most amount of pockets for storage, whether it’s snacks, a wallet, keys, or a phone while riding the resort or in the side/backcountry. The Smarty 3-in-1 Cargo Bib has a great fit that allows you to move easily, and the removable smarty liner is great for layering for cold days. It’s a great choice for a mens snow bib that will take you through the entire season, in most conditions.
Pros:
- removable liner, can be worn on their own. Also provides great warmth in the coldest conditions
- Comfortable
- Can be worn all season long, in most conditions
- Fit (not baggy but not tight)
- Ample storage
- Key ring (love that this is included, other bibs overlook this small but important feature!)
- Adjustability
Cons:
- None
