Review:

Early and late season weather in the Tetons can be a pretty mixed bag. I’ve had a few days of sleet, freezing rain, and really wet snow. There’s nothing worse than riding in waterlogged gear. I wanted a durable, waterproof pant so I picked up the Dakine Control II Gore-Tex 2L pant.

The Control II pant’s construction is made up of a durable water repellant (DWR) polyester material, a Gore-Tex membrane, taffeta lining system and fully taped seams.

The two-layer Gore-Tex construction prevents rain, sleet, and snow from sneaking in and getting you soaked while maintaining the level of breathability necessary to allow sweaty, internal moisture to escape for lasting dry comfort.

The Control II has a tailored fit, so it’s a little tighter fitting in the knee and thigh area. The Articulated knee does help keep your range of motion free. The waist fits true to size and is easily adjusted with the Velcro inner waistband adjustment. On warmer days I just wore a pair of shorts under the pants and the taffeta lining system was very comfortable against my skin. It’s also quick-drying, which is nice when you are hiking a boot pack or skinning on a tour.

The Control II pant is a shell so you will need to layer underneath. I found the pant does a great job of protecting you from moisture and wind but definitely does not provide insulation. We have our fair share of very frigid days in December and January in the Tetons, so I had to really layer up underneath these pants. Being a tailored fit, this made the thigh and knee area a bit snug but not to the point of interfering with my movement.

The mesh-lined leg vents allow you to dump unwanted heat on warmer days, but I found the zipper to be a bit difficult to zip back up.

The scuff guard on the lower leg has really kept these pants in great shape with a full season of use.

There are six pockets for more than ample storage in these pants.

Overall the Control Pant II is a great two layer, high-quality Gore-Tex pant for the ultimate in water and windproofing protection, with a very reasonable price point of $290.
