The Range MIPS helmet from Giro is a great fitting, ultra-comfortable helmet that offers superior protection for your head and brain. The Giro Range MIPS helmet gives the top quality shielding and support of a Multi-Directional Impact Protection System coupled with a ton of other really exceptional features. The helmet uses an EPP (Expanded Polypropylene) foam liner. Using multi-impact EPP (Expanded Polypropylene) as a core material creates a helmet that will protect your head over and over again as opposed to most helmets which will be permanently compressed when absorbing an even a minor impact. The Range helmet is a two-piece shell that can be adjusted to fit your head easily with the dial located on the back of the helmet. A lot of helmets have a strap or wire that adjusts the inner frame to your head, but with this helmet, the outer and inner shell both adjust to your head. This really makes for a great fit or as Giro calls it, Comfort Fit. The only drawback I see with this system is you cannot comfortably wear goggles under the helmet. But, the Range does have an elastic goggle retention strap to keep your goggles in place and secure on the outside of the helmet.
The Range MIPS helmet also has adjustable venting that can be easily configured depending on the conditions and/or temperature. In addition, the Range uses Giro’s Stack Vent Technology. This technology was developed based on research showing that goggle fogging is caused by warm air in the goggles center vent. Giro aligns their Stack Vent with the center vent to keep your goggle clear and fog-free. The Range has twelve vents in all, with six that can be open or closed. I really liked this feature as it allowed me to regulate heat/cold depending on temperatures or activity.
The Range helmet uses the Fidlock® Magnetic Buckle Closure rather than the traditional snapping closure. Basically, the buckle slides together and is aided by strong magnets. This proved to be really easy to use, especially when your hands are cold or using mittens.
The Range helmet comes with a POV camera mount that attaches easily to the front of the helmet. This eliminates the need for the sticky camera mounts because the camera mount just snaps into the vent on the front of the helmet. When not in use it is not an eyesore like the stick on camera mounts and just looks like part of the venting system of the helmet.
For the liner of the Range helmet, Giro used Polartec® Power Grid™ Padding. The Polartec liner is designed to move moisture away from the skin and dry quickly. It also uses Silver Salt (Salt Chloride) to prevent bacteria and odor. I found the material to be very comfortable against my skin.
The Giro Range MIPS helmet offers the superior protection of a Multi-Directional Impact Protection System and a ton of other really noteworthy features. The Comfort Fit Technology provides a remarkable fit. The addition of the Fidlock closure and the Polartec liner really set this helmet in a class of its own. My only complaint with this helmet is the earpads are really thick which makes hearing a bit of an issue, but they are easily removed. I also found it did not pair well with Giro’s Method goggles. Be sure to check Giro’s recommended goggles for this helmet for a proper fit. I did find it paired well with several other brands of goggles. The Giro Range helmet has so many features that add to its overall comfort, it really is an impressive helmet.
- Great fit
- Fidlock closure
- MIPS protection
- Soft liner
- Ear pads are really thick, making it hard to hear
