Gordini Rally Mitt

The Rally Mitt performance and review:

We have some downright brutal temperatures in the Teton’s, so I am always looking for a mitten or glove that can withstand the rigors of snowboarding and provide adequate warmth. I prefer a mitten instead of a glove while snowboarding for the added warmth they provide. I was intrigued by the Gordini Rally Mitt for its weatherproof qualities.

We’ve had quite a mixed bag of conditions in the Teton’s already this winter and the Rally Mitt really held up to the task of keeping my hands both warm and dry. They come with a thin, touchscreen capable liner for those extra cold days, but I was fine without this liner most of the time. However, those liners were definitely needed on our recent sub-zero days! The Rally Mitt also has a zippered pocket on the back of the mitt for hand warmer storage. I didn’t have an opportunity to try this out but find it a very cool feature that could definitely come in handy. I typically tend to run pretty hot so the Hydrowick microdenier lining of the main mitt keeps my hands from becoming sweaty on warmer days.

I was impressed with the dexterity the Rally Mitt provides. A lot of mittens are stiff and won’t allow you to buckle bindings, helmets, zip jackets, etc… easily, forcing you to remove your mitten to perform simple tasks. The Rally Mitt is a very soft, flexible mitten and I found I was able to zip pockets, buckle bindings, etc without removing the mitten and exposing my hands to the elements. The palm seemed pretty thin and I was concerned about wear from hand drags and grabbing airs, but the ripstop construction of the mitt and the textured palm have held up surprisingly well.

The Rally Mitt features a GORE-TEX® outer to provide the maximum in water and windproofing. For insulation, Gordini put a pretty big layer of Megaloft® on the back of the hand. Gordini smartly pre-curved the Rally mitt so the extra insulation does not interfere with finger movement. Having most of the padding on the back allowed for more feeling and control of my fingers and thumb for gripping things. I’ve been very impressed with the flexibility and control of the mitt from the moment I put them on.

The Rally Mitt is intended to be an under mitt, fitting under the cuff of your jacket sleeve. With its hook and loop cuff closure, I was able to securely fasten the closure preventing elements and easily put my sleeve over. It sealed up well and managed to keep me warm, dry and snow-free on our recent deep pow days.

Overall impressions:

The Gordini Rally Mitt is a great all-around winter mitt for your desired snowsport. It provides great warmth in temperature ranges from zero to 30 degrees Fahrenheit. The Rally Mitt offers ample dexterity for zippers, bindings, etc. If you are looking for a warm, durable, reasonably priced mitten, definitely look into the Gordini Rally Mitt.

Pros:

  • Fits true to size
  • Palm durability
  • Excellent waterproof and windproof option
  • Pre-curved for increased dexterity
  • Great warmth for most winter conditions from 10 degrees to upper 30’s

Cons:

  • May show wear faster than a leather mitt
