Jones Ultra Mountain Twin Review

Review:

The Jones Ultra Mountain Twin snowboard is a directional twin freestyle board.  It is a performance enhanced version of the Mountain Twin.  The Ultra Mountain Twin upgrades include a sintered 9900 base, carbon stringers, Jones’ new Power Core and an ash veneer.

The new Ultra Construction combines innovative construction techniques, superlight wood cores, and carbon fiber strips.  I found the Jones board to be really lightweight for a 160cm board.

Jones rates the Ultra Mountain Twin as a 7/10  on the flex rating but I found it to be surprisingly flexible from tip to tail.  Pressing into butters felt more like a mid flex but the torsional flex was pretty stiff.

The Ultra Mountain Twin features a CAMROCK profile, rocker/camber flex pattern defined by evenly balanced tip and tail rocker and camber between the bindings.

Jones Ultra Mountain Twin

Jones altered the shape for the 2017 model, they mostly changed the nose and tail shape to aid in the displacement of powder as well as turn initiation.  I found the Ultra Mountain Twin charged hard in powder and also floated well.  I took it out in a 12″+ day at Grand Targhee resort and truly enjoyed ripping fresh powder on this board. The board has a really nice stable feel to it in all conditions.  The board does have a little bit of a setback, so it is not a true twin.  It’s a directional twin, meaning it has extra rocker in the nose, less in the tail, smaller tail, bigger nose.  I rode the Ultra Mountain Twin centered so I could ride switch, etc.  But on a deep powder day, you can set back the bindings up to 3.5 inches for some extra float.

It also features Mellow Magne-Traction which gives it really nice edge hold.  This combined with the CAMROCK profile gives it some pop, snap and control on hardpack or venturing into the park.

The topsheet print, with tree core growth rings, has a natural wood look underneath and is a really nice touch to top off a really solid all-mountain board.

Summary: Jones Ultra Mountain Twin

The Jones Ultra Mountain Twin is an intermediate to advanced rider all mountain board.  It was really fast and super responsive in powder.  The setback stance option made the board float really well and gave it a fun, surfy feel.  I highly recommend this board for charging big mountains and slashing fresh pow.
