I have been a huge fan of camber boards for a long time now and while I have tried other profiles over the past few years, I always come back to preferring the camber profile. It’s not often I even look much at anything other than a traditional camber, but the new Never Summer Proto Ultra’s profile with Never Summer’s new Recurve Triple Camber definitely piqued my interest.

This new technology aims to bridge the gap between traditional camber and Never Summer’s existing Triple Camber. It incorporates the familiar stability of camber underfoot, but adds strategically placed rocker sections near the inserts and between the feet. It all translates to powerful edge control, smooth turn initiation and catch-free riding. It really feels and rides more like a traditional camber board with better edge hold. The more I rode this board, the more I liked it. The NS Proto Ultra is an all mountain weapon.

The Proto Ultra is pretty stiff (7/10) but does have good torsional flex. It features the Chris Corning Carbon layup: carbon stringers in an X shape with one on the top between the feet and 2 on the bottom just outside of the inserts to the tip and tail.

Like most Never Summer boards, this board has plenty of dampness. You really do not feel much chatter or vibration in your feet. The Proto Ultra has harmonic dampening in the tip and tail. It also has RDS (rubber dampening system) along both sides and underfoot to reduce vibrations as well. I found the Proto Ultra to be really stable and damp even at high speeds. You hardly feel any chatter or vibrations.

The new Proto Ultra was really good everywhere. I really liked it in the park as it has plenty of pop and snap for jumps and rails. This board was fast edge to edge and has enough torsional flex to be lively and playful. With the Power Grip Side cut it holds an edge well even in really icy conditions. The only place I didn’t love it was in deep powder. But you could always set it back a bit for better float.

The Durasurf XT Sintered 5501 Base is very durable and fast. When properly waxed it is one of the fastest I have ridden. The graphics on this board are very simple and clean, yet visually attractive. I’ve always been a fan of the eagle die cut, the color combination on the Proto Ultra really stands out. Overall, I really enjoyed this board. It’s fast, holds turns well, is really stable at high speed, and is just a great all mountain board. If you are a camber fan, you will really enjoy the Recurve Triple Camber.

Overall Impression:

The Never Summer Proto Ultra with the new Recurve Triple Camber impressed me everywhere on the mountain. It’s a versatile board that excels at carving, offers playful pop, and rips in the park. While not ideal for the deepest powder days, it can still handle them with a setback stance. If you’re looking for a board that combines powerful carving with playful freestyle performance, the Proto Ultra is a great option.
