Phunkshun Wear Hood performance and review:
We have some downright nasty temperatures in the Teton’s in the winter. I’ve had numerous days with windburn and/or frostbite, so I am always looking for extra protection from the elements. What makes this more difficult is that I also do not like having my nose/mouth covered tightly by a facemask. Chris and I are both big fans of Phunkshun Wear’s Neck Tubes, so I was excited to try their hood after seeing it at SIA.
The Phunkshun Wear Hood is made from their Thermo-Phleece, which is a high-loft polyester fleece with thermal properties for extra warmth. The outside of the hood has Phunkshun’s Anti-Phreeze treatment, making it water repellant and freeze resistant. The hood also has great sun protection, blocking 99% of UV rays and providing UPF 50+.
It easily fit over any of my helmets (L/XL) and is simple to adjust the drawcord to cinch down the face opening. I really liked the extra protection the hood provides to my neck, face, ears, etc. On windy, cold days I cinched it down pretty tight to lessen the amount of exposed skin. The face opening is rather large so it can be a bit tricky to cover your mouth and nose easily.
It can be a bit warm when charging laps in the spring but I did like the protection from the sun.
If you are looking for a water resistant, warm hood that provides protection from sun, wind and frigid temperatures, the Phunkshun Wear hood is a great option.
Pros:
- Great style and construction
- Good warmth
- Repels water
Cons:
- Phleece lining leaves material on goggles, etc
