Review

A bone-chilling night on a ski/surf trip, a van that would not start, and then being saved by the comfort and warmth of a sleeping bag is what spurned the conversation that brainstormed Rumpl. Returning from their trip, the founders of Rumpl borrowed a sewing machine, and the “sleeping bag blanket” was born.

Chris and I visited with Rumpl a few years back at Outdoor Retailer and were intrigued with their line of outdoor-friendly blankets. They are designed with active outdoor enthusiasts in mind but would be great for anyone wanting a lightweight, warm blanket. I picked one up this spring before a camping trip to Montana, and boy did that come in handy after an evening mountain bike ride as the temperatures started dropping.

Rumpl decided to capitalize on the advantages of synthetic materials over down. There are a few big benefits of using a synthetic material over down: down tends to flatten out over time; down takes a long time to dry; and down can begin to smell over time. Nanoloft is Rumpl’s synthetic fill fiber that has down-like similarities. Nanoloft is 100% post-consumer recycled insulation. The NanoLoft insulation traps warmth inside small pockets of air, preserving heat. Wrapped around the shoulders and clipped in place, helps to trap that body heat in well.

The NanoLoft Puffy Blanket is very lightweight and compresses well. It easily packs into its provided stuff sack. It ends up being about the size of a large water bottle so it easily fits into a backpack. I’ve packed it into my mountain bike hydration pack a few times this summer for a picnic with my wife.

We used it to keep warm while camping in Montana and were both impressed at how warm and comfortable it was. My wife is always cold and the ability to wrap up in this blanket made returning from our evening rides much more pleasant. The cape clip comes in very handy as it stays put around your shoulders and frees your hands up. Rumpl designed the blanket with a quick clip to help the blanket stay put around your shoulders.

The DWR coating is definitely a plus, we’ve had little spills on it and it sheds most of the water. The protective coating helped keep us dry when it was set down on the slightly damp ground. For bigger spills or perhaps rain, it still dries quickly.

The Rumpl NanoLoft Puffy Blanket has proved to be very durable. After several months of use and washing, it still looks new.
