Review:

Last year, before this snow season really began, I wrote a review for a great fitting, stylish goggle with a huge field of vision – the SHRED Rarify. The Rarify came with two lenses, CBL Plasma Mirror and CBL Sky Mirror. These lenses have you covered in just about every condition and every kind of lighting you can imagine. Adding the SHRED CBL Hero Mirror lens to their wide range of goggle lenses rounded out coverage for all kinds of weather. Using SHRED’s 1-2-3 system, the lenses can be swapped very easily. The easy 1-2-3 system lets you simply pull the forehead and nose parts of the frame apart, pop the lens out then reverse to pop the new one in.

The Hero Mirror lens is recommended for bright sun to snow and cloudy conditions. I call Grand Targhee Resort my home mountain as I spend pretty much every weekend there, but it is notorious for dense fog. The Hero Lens was decent in the thick fog we get up top but I’d recommend SHRED’s Sky Mirror Lens for those conditions. However, the Hero Lens does a great job providing clarity and protection for your eyes on sunny, bluebird days or when then are a few clouds around. We were fortunate enough to get up there over the holidays to really test it out. The Hero Lens (14% VLT = Visible Light Transmission) has characteristics similar to the Plasma Mirror Lens (15% VLT), but it has a green/gold mirror finish to it, depending on angle and light conditions. It lends to a clear and crisp wild field of vision on the sunnier days.

The Hero Lens also uses SHRED’s CBL technology (contrast boosting lens) and Nodistortion technology to provide optimal clarity in all weather and lighting. This includes their pressure regulation valve technology which provides crystal clear vision during altitude change.

This lens also has Shred’s Anti-Fog treatment, which comes in very handy if you plan to do any hiking or skinning. There is a hydrophobic treatment on the vents to reduce clogging from snow or water and help prevent fogging. The lenses are designed to be pretty much bulletproof and keep things extra clear.

Overall Impressions:

The SHRED Hero Lens with 14% VLT does a great job of reflecting the sun’s rays on bluebird days and has a really cool look to it with its green/gold lens. The SHRED lens with Contrast Boosting technology, Nodistortion, and SHRED Wide provides an uncompromised field of view in most conditions.
