Review:
Chris and I have been fortunate in the past few years to work with SHRED Optics on numerous reviews of their goggles, helmets, and protective gear. I call Grand Targhee Resort my home mountain as I spend pretty much every weekend there, but it is notorious for dense fog. I’ve been really impressed with SHRED’s lenses and their performance in fog and I have been able to truly put that to the test.
I have a larger face so I was stoked to try the Rarify as it offers a large lens and a wide field of vision. I have really enjoyed the field of view in the Rarify as you really can see in every direction without obstruction. It’s like going to see an IMAX movie… remember movies?! I normally wear a Large to XL helmet and these goggles pair very well with both helmets I tried them with, SHRED Totality and Giro Range, with no goggle gap issues. A lot of goggles with a large spherical lens can often make you look like you are wearing a fishbowl on your face. SHRED did an amazing job on the design of the Rarify goggles as they do not look obnoxious, but still allow for an incredible range of vision.
The Rarify uses SHRED Wide in the frame design. SHRED Wide offers 20% more peripheral vision than a lot of the goggles on the market. Chris and I were fortunate enough to receive a demo of this at Outdoor Retailer/SIA. The SHRED goggles were impressive compared to other top brands.
I’ve primarily used the Sky Mirror Lens (VLT 45%) with these frames The mirror tint really does a great job of reflecting the sun’s rays on bluebird days and provides 100% UVA-UVB-UVC protection. But where this lens really excels is in the dense fog conditions. With 45% visible light transmission (VLT), more light passes through the lens aiding your vision. This, combined with the CBL (contrast boosting lens) and Shreds Nodistortion technology make for an almost unfair advantage in challenging conditions. This lens also has Shred’s Anti-Fog treatment, which comes in very handy if you plan to do any hiking or skinning.
It’s relatively simple to change out lenses when needed using the 1-2-3 system. I was able to use the Plasma Mirror lens in the spring on a few split boarding missions. It’s 15% VLT does a great job of reflecting the sun’s rays on bluebird days and has a really cool look to it with its blue/green lens.
The face foam on the Rarify is very comfortable on your face and has held up well during a season of use. The strap is a standard material, but works well and stays in place thanks to silicone strips. Some of the previous SHRED goggles we reviewed had some minor fogging issues but the Rarify is adequately vented and I did not have any issues. Overall, these goggles quickly made it on my list of favorites. The fit, range of vision, and extreme clarity of the lenses has surpassed most others.
Overall Impressions:
The SHRED Rarify offers a huge field of vision and great style. They ship with two lenses so you are covered in just about every condition. The SHRED lenses with Contrast Boosting technology, Nodistortion, and SHRED Wide provide an uncompromised field of view in every condition.
